Duck Commander Shares the Good News
People from several states and Canada poured into the White’s Ferry Road Church of Christ today to see and hear the man called the “Duck Commander“, Phil Robertson. Today was “Duck Commander Sunday” and it was a huge day! Our regulars at WFR served as parking attendants, ushers, greeters, and in other ways, to get hundreds into and out of two big services.
With cameras and cell phones in hand, Duck Dynasty fans saw all the characters in the photo above. Si Robertson led the opening prayer, Jase Robertson gave the communion meditation and Jep Robertson and John Godwin led prayers. Missy Robertson and her son Cole Robertson sang on the praise team and Alan Robertson greeted the crowd and introduced his dad, Phil, the patriarch of the Robertson clan and founder of Duck Commander.
Phil was in his usual form for both the 8:00 am and 10:00 am services. His message included no fluff, rather it was gut punch reality. Our country has declined in direct proportion to how we have nationally forgotten God. He quoted many of the founders of our Republic and compared them to the leaders we have today, it’s not pretty. One of my favorite quotes this morning was “Our problems don’t have a political solution, they only have a spiritual solution”. To that I can say a hearty Amen!
Then, as only Phil Robertson can, he carefully explained why men and women need Christ and delivered the most clear and convincing presentation of the good news you can hear anywhere. Not one person could leave that room and say they have not heard the gospel.
From Phil, the oldest, right down to the children, the Robertson family sees the success of the TV show, and their popularity, as an open door and a platform to share Christ with as many people as possible while they have opportunity. They are being faithful to that vision, preaching the good news about Jesus to thousands each month.
Why do the Robertson’s do what they do? And why does a church have Duck Commander Sunday? Love, that’s the answer! They, and the church, love people enough to do whatever possible to announce the good news to as many people as possible.
We Americans are still blessed to live in a relatively free society where we can still worship openly and share Christ with others. We must not take this liberty for granted. Pray for our leaders and pray that the bad ones will be replaced with better ones. Above all else let’s put into practice loving God and loving each other. It is a winning plan!
Duck Dynasty, The Story Behind the Story
About six months ago I wrote a post titled “Duck Dynasty, what you know and probably what you don’t know”. In that post I said that Duck Dynasty is not just about a TV show, or duck calls, or even hunting ducks. Rather, the Robertson clan’s first priority is to reach as many people as possible with the good news about Jesus.
Fast forward to this morning. During the invitation at our church the oldest Robertson son, Alan related this story. A few days ago a call came in to the Duck Commander office from a young wife. She told about how her husband, who was not a Christian, had become a big fan of Duck Dynasty. He was so impressed with the personalities that he got on the internet and found a video of a talk the Duck Commander, Phil Robertson, had given. He watched and listened and it got him thinking. Later he saw the video of Willie Robertson speaking to the students at Harding University. He heard Phil preach about Jesus dying, the resurrection, etc., and then heard Willie give his testimony about what Jesus means to him.
The young lady went on to say that after hearing those messages her husband had decided he wanted in! He had decided to make Jesus Lord of his life. And then she asked “Would it be asking too much to have a Robertson baptize him?’ Alan said he replied “Of course not, that’s what we do!” So he asked the young man to stand up. This big tall handsome young man from Houston, Texas made a public profession of his faith in Jesus and a few moments later we all were delighted to watch Jase Robertson baptize him.
Alan was right, that is what they do! None of the Duck Dynasty guys and gals ever miss an opportunity to share with folks the good news about what Jesus has done for sinners. They have a very funny and entertaining TV show and growing business in West Monroe. But what drives the Robertson’s and their crew is their passion for Christ and their love of the people he died to save.
I have known lots of people in my life, lots of good, devoted to Jesus kind of people. But I have yet to meet anyone who is more focused on getting the gospel out than Phil Robertson and his family. So, behind all the fun of Duck Dynasty is the Kingdom of God and they are helping to grow it.

What Duckcommander is Really Selling – Rob Sumrall
Pastor Rob Sumrall’s post about the Robertson family and Duck Dynasty is excellent! So good I decided to post it here.
Phil Robertson may not appreciate me writing about his business or his family. I’m what Phil would derisively call a “yuppy.” I don’t own camo, hunt, or have a beard. That’s not to say I’m some granola PETA-type; I’m a devoted carnivore who loves gumbo, fried fish, and even the occasional boudin link. Phil lives off the land and, frankly, doesn’t think very highly of the lifestyle the rest of us non-outdoorsy types choose to live. I dwell comfortably in the suburbs buying my groceries at Kroger where the butcher kindly dresses my meat. In some ways, Phil and I have about as much in common as Snooki and the Pope, which is why it may seem odd that I have been sucked into Phil Robertson’s world via the uber-popular Duck Dynasty reality show.
Phil’s story fascinates me.
