Nuggets of Fudge, A man, not a plan

The original founders of the Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement (RM) had known, understood, and preached Jesus Christ. However, from the second generation forward, Jesus Christ himself gradually faded from view as the primary subject discussed week after week from the pulpits of Churches of Christ, to be replaced by “the Lord’s church” (or “The New Testament church”) and “the plan of salvation.” In his book titled The Core Gospel: On Restoring the Crux of the Matter (ACU Press, 1992), the late Dr. Bill Love, a Jesus-man and Bible preacher of uncommon giftedness, painstakingly documented, generation by generation, this gradual but undeniable change in the message preached by the most influential preachers within the RM during its first century.

In his mercy and from time to time, God raised up various men to call the Churches of Christ back to their proper subject–Jesus Christ. One such messenger was a man named K. C. Moser (1893-1976), who led out with an article entitled “Preaching Jesus,” published in the December 1, 1932 issue of the Gospel Advocate, the major Church of Christ publication of influence east of the Mississippi River. Moser’s title came from Acts8:35 which, in the older versions, says that when Philip encountered the Ethiopian eunuch, he “preached to him Jesus.” Philip did not preach a system of religion, or conditions of salvation disconnected from the atonement. He proclaimed Jesus as the Son of God who bears the sins of the world.

K. C. Moser simply pointed out that to do otherwise is to make grace void and to turn conditions of salvation into pure law. When Philip encountered the eunuch, Moser argued, he “preached not a plan, but a man.” That phrase, and its counterpart “the man, not the plan,” quickly caught on throughout the Churches of Christ among parties of both persuasions. “The Man, Not the Plan” remains the shorthand way of referring to this controversy among the Churches of Christ even today.

During the following year, 1933, Texas preacher R. L. Whiteside began a response to Moser’s teaching on Romans. Both men actively advanced their respective views in sermons, classes, and by every means at their disposal. Moser set out his Jesus-centered teaching on salvation in two influential books. The Gist of Romans was first printed in 1957 with a second edition in 1958. The Way of Salvation was issued some time later, and it was the catalyst that provoked publication of Whiteside’s commentary on Romans. Unfortunately, at almost every important point throughout Paul’s grand epistle, rather than explaining the text of Romans, Whiteside comes dangerously close to merely explaining Romans away.

Approximately a decade after that, my own first religious article to be published in a major brotherhood journal was a piece called “Emphasis: Christ,” Firm Foundation,LXXIV:45 (November 7, 1967). It was immediately attacked and denounced by articles in four or five other smaller journals. My crime, according to these critics? I was preaching the Man, they said, and not placing proper emphasis on the Plan. I thanked God that he had put me in the right place, and prayed that I would always occupy it. A few years later, I published a little book titled THE GRACE OF GOD, which was all about Jesus and salvation through trusting in him. I sent a copy to K. C. Moser, then still alive. To my enormous delight, he wrote back a hand-written note expressing appreciation for the gift, and stating that I was teaching precisely what he believed the Bible to teach.

The church building has no soul

Wstudley20church1e use the word “church” in a far different way than our first century brothers and sisters did. They never once said “Let’s go to church”. They understood that “church” was the gathered people who were believers in Jesus. We do use the word with that meaning in mind but we also use it to mean a building where we meet together once or twice a week, or what happens in the building. I don’t have a problem with saying “Let’s go to church”, I use “church” in that context and meaning frequently. But, there is another problem.

For some reason the building where we meet on Sunday has become a holy place to many people. In fact, many of our church of Christ folks believe the auditorium is more holy than the class rooms or the fellowship hall. For example, some churches will allow music with instruments in the sound track in the fellowship hall but not in the “worship center” or whatever name they have for it. And, some believe that women can speak in a class of mixed adults but not in the “worship assembly”. I have friends who would not dare come to worship on Sunday in the same clothing they would come to a Bible study in one of the class rooms. For some reason unknown to me people think the biggest room in the church building is a holy place.

Not any of these things come from the New Testament. There were no “church buildings” in the first century. People gathered in homes, temple court yards, by the sea, and I suppose any other suitable spot that was convenient. There were no pulpits, so the pulpit is no more a holy place to speak from than is a table in the kitchen.

Because of tradition ingrained over hundreds of years we have adopted ideas that are special to us and guard them as closely as Holy Scripture. The church building has no soul! It’s the people of God who are the “church”. If they meet in someone’s home, if they meet at a ball park, or in a picnic area by a lake, they are the local “church”. These closely held traditions have led men to make rules about what can and cannot happen in the biggest room in the building on Sunday morning. That is not a good thing. None of those man-made rules furthers the cause of Christ and the good news about Him.

We don’t go to “church” to be in God’s presence, we are in God’s presence all the time. If you are a true disciple of Jesus, when you move a part of the church is moving. And when you speak, the church is speaking. Our speech, our actions, and our attitudes should be no different on Saturday afternoon than on Sunday morning, where ever we are.

So let’s stop playing games. Let’s go to church and let’s be the church from Sunday to Sunday. A watching world needs to see genuine Christians living simple, loving everyone, and making much of Jesus.

The comprehensive scope of the gospel of Christ

The gospel, or “good news”, about Christ is very, very good news because the truth about human beings without Him is so horribly bad.

Every person who is born is born helpless. On this point surely there can be no disagreement. Our precious babies must be cared for in every way. They must be fed, diapers changed, bathed, carried, calmed when they are uncomfortable because they can’t speak, and the list goes on. Babies, even the strongest and brightest are equally helpless. As they grow, gain strength and agility, and learn, slowly they become less dependent on Mom and Dad. Soon they begin to talk, to walk, and do a variety of the cutest things. Then, all too soon for most parents and grandparents, they grow up and are out of the house and on their own. (Some not soon enough)

When children mature into teens and young adults they are still just as profoundly helpless but in a totally different way. Some of them will still lean on dear old Mom and Dad and Gran and Pap longer than anyone wishes, but apart from that each person old enough to do what they know to be wrong. and do it any way. share some problems they are helpless to cure of their own resources. This is true in every place on the earth in every culture and in every tribe and tongue.

Humans are ungodly and can’t do anything to become godly.

Humans are unrighteousness and can’t do anything to become righteous.

Humans are alienated from God and can’t do anything to be reconciled to Him.

Humans are everyone going to die and can do nothing to avoid dying.

Humans will face the wrath of God and can do nothing to avoid that wrath.

Humans have the capacity to commit all kinds of offences against God and His law and can do nothing about it.

The Bible is unambiguous and crystal clear about the condition of a person without God. The bad news about our universal condition is indeed very bad! The precise reason the gospel of Christ is such joyous good news is this, every human problem announced in the Bible about sinful people is gloriously solved in Christ alone. Owing only to His work for sinners the ungodly can be made godly, the unrighteous can be made righteous, aliens can be reconciled to God, physical death will only be the grand entrance into life everlasting, those facing the just wrath of God will not be appointed to wrath, and the penalty, power, and even the presence of sin will be taken away, and knowing God forever will be their joy! This is the best good news possible! No other good news compares.

These passages of Scripture give a broad view of the good news for sinners. What I say, or any person for that matter, is only relevant to the degree what he or she says can be confirmed by the Word of God. So, what does the Bible say about the things I have mentioned?

Romans 1:14 I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. 15 So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.

The great Apostle Paul knew a personal obligation to share the good news about Jesus with everyone possible. To “Greeks” and “barbarians”, to “wise” and to “foolish” and even to those who were already God’s people, “you also who are in Rome”. Some translations use the word “debtor” for the phrase “under obligation”. Paul felt he owed everyone the good news and he intended to pay that debt.

So why was Paul so “eager” to preach the good news? “..it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes” it. Jews and Greeks alike (the whole of humanity) need to be saved from themselves and their helpless and hopeless condition, and here it is! “The righteousness of God is revealed” in the gospel! Here is good news for unrighteous people, God reveals His righteousness to those who believe the good news about Jesus and his work.

Later in his letter to the Romans Paul gives more good news!

Romans 5:For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

This is a remarkable passage! If every seminarian and every Bible school student and every preacher/teacher trainee understood this wonderful passage our churches would be far different. Vibrant missions works will never happen unless those who go understand the gospel of Christ for sinners.

God meets us where we are, in “weakness”. He comes to us in our present condition, “ungodly”. He works for us while we are still “sinners”. It is very good news that Christ died for the “ungodly” because that is all of us! He didn’t ask us to reform ourselves. He did not ask that we prove ourselves by doing good, going to church, etc. No! Christ died for ungodly sinners. That’s you! That’s me!

You and I might die for a good friend, for a good person, but not for an enemy, not for a bad person. But God’s love is not like our love. It is bigger and better! God put his love on display for the whole creation by dying for sinners! But what does his death mean to me, to you?

“We are justified by his blood”. This means that when Christ bled and died on the cross you and I were “set right” with God. We, though sinful to the core, are declared not guilty based wholly upon the sacrificial death of Jesus. The old song asks “What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus” and so it is. We are not approved by God because of our performance but by Christ’s performance. Never forget, this saving work of Christ was done for you but outside of you. You were totally helpless to fix your broken condition.

But there’s much more! “much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.” What wonderful news! We sinners were facing the wrath of God! Through Christ we will be saved from the wrath of God. The time will come when the fury of God’s just wrath against sin, against those who ignore his love and continue in their evil ways, will be poured out without measure. I don’t pretend to know all that entails but it is very, very bad.

We are saved by his life. Christ died for us reconciling us to God and because He was raised from the dead he promises we too shall live. Because he lives I live. Because he can not die I can not die. I am saved by his life!

But there’s even more! Better than being justified, better than being saved from God’s wrath, better than being reconciled to God, and even better than knowing we will be saved by his life is that we can rejoice in God forever!

Yes, God saves us from our sins. Yes, God saves us from wrath to come. Yes, God makes us righteous. Yes, God gives us eternal life! But far better than these things is that God intends that we have joy. Joy whose source is Jesus, joy unending, joy unfettered by worldly affairs. joy forever, joy to the full!

Life present you with some questions you can’t answer? Jesus is the answer!

There is no life gone to far. There is no sinner to sinful. There is no rebellion to rebellious. There is no one to far away from God.

Christ died for you. He died for your sins. Why not receive the benefits of Christ’s saving work for you? Repent of living to please yourself. How is it working out for you? Turn your whole being over to Him. Believe that God came in flesh, lived a perfect life and offered that perfect life as a sacrifice for you, and took upon him all of your dirty sins, then died the death you deserved. On the 3rd day Jesus arose from the grave alive to die no more and by his life you too can live, free from the guilt and penalty of sin and made righteous as He is righteous. All of your greatest needs are met only in Christ and the cross of his death and his triumphant resurrection.

This is GOOD NEWS!

4 Marks of a Great Church

My wife and I are blessed to be a part of a great church. Next month will mark our 14th year as members of WFR Church in West Monroe, LA. Yes, it is the “Duck Dynasty church”. But, it was a great, thriving church long before the popular TV show and the popularity of the Robertson family. WFR (Whites Ferry Road) has been one of the leading churches in northeast Louisiana for many years, and among churches of Christ there are few churches in the state that are as large and far-reaching.

I have been an observer of churches for many decades and pastor/teachers have been among my best friends since the early ’70’s. I believe there are some concrete reasons some churches succeed while others survive. Success can be measured in many ways and is quite subjective. However, given the mandate to reach the lost with the saving gospel of Christ I believe numbers matter, though for sure membership numbers, the number of baptisms, etc. are only one piece of the puzzle. As I think about why WFR Church of Christ is the size and kind of church it is, the reasons are the same ones that other great churches share. A few of those markers, from my perspective, follow.

Men and women of vision  Our history is one of men like Alton Howard, Carl Allison, Bill Smith, Norm Rhodes, and a host of others whose vision for the impact of the work in West Monroe always and forever included the whole world. Every great church I have observed, without regard to the brand, is global in scope of mission. Yes, they are impacting their communities, but their reach is to the far corners of the world.

WFR’s leaders believed they could get the gospel to the ends of the earth so World Radio was born. Now many decades later tens of thousands of people have been reached with the good news and thousands of churches have been planted because of visionaries who thought big. Every church I am aware of that is baptizing people weekly at home are global in the scope of their mission. WFR Relief was begun to serve the planet in the aftermath of natural disasters. Since the early ’80’s WFR Relief has responded to the needs of hurting people around the world. Vision is not confined to only the men. Dr Joneal Kirby began a ministry to young mothers called Heart to Home. It’s a ministry where the older women teach the younger women by example, by word, and monthly meetings where “Heart mom’s” host “Heart sisters” for a great meal, fellowship and a Bible lesson. In the group my wife helps host women who a few months ago were really troubled are now themselves ministering to others and becoming great leaders among our woman. Heart to Home has been a blessing to our church and many others and is soon going national. What a great work!

People with no real vision past their church walls will do little to help anyone.

Transparent leadership  Sadly, in most churches, the people in the pews believe the pastor, the elders, or deacons, are somehow on a higher spiritual level than they are. In some cases that is surely true but for the most part its baloney. Leaders who never hint that they have struggles in life, who never admit they struggle with sin just like everyone else, will not produce sold out followers of Jesus. The most holy people I know are also the most honest and the quickest to admit they are flawed people who desperately need God’s grace. Unless church leaders are marked by humility and the willingness to be honest about themselves, publicly, they will not be good leaders.

One of the most important reasons many people come forward at the invitation at WFR to confess some sin, to be baptized, to be prayed for about some sickness or marriage problem is that they know they will not be judged by any of our leaders, or our members as less than one of the family who is hurting. It’s OK to be up front with all of life’s problems, even when it’s ugly and sinful. The folks are met with several people around them, giving hugs, words of encouragement, and unconditional forgiveness.

Generosity  One of the first marks of the church after Pentecost was their generous hearts. People who had stuff sold it and gave the money to brothers and sisters who had little. A stingy congregation will never do much good. Many of the fastest growing churches in America give almost 50% of their funds away every year. Someone once said “If you get a man’s heart you’ll get his billfold”. I think there is some truth to that. Some people are just plain stingy and as a result are either broke or can’t enjoy what they have been blessed with because they hoard. Churches should be givers. They should help the helpless. I have been amazed at the generosity of our people at WFR over these years. All great churches heavily support missions but also give to other worthy causes.

Christ centered-Grace driven   Every great church shares this distinctive. Far to many churches invest their time and resources in the wrong places. God never called anyone to do “sin management”. Christ came to crush the power of sin and to make men and women righteous. Most preachers on Sunday give the folks in the pew a devotional that appeals to their emotions, or they try to encourage spiritual disciplines (prayer, Bible study, having a quiet time, giving, etc), or some other message with a view of behavior modification. The preacher is thinking “If I can just get the church members to do this or do that or be this or be that….” I have a suggestion. Start preaching Christ and when they fall in love with him, when he becomes their greatest treasure they will do that stuff you want them to do.

No great church (and no great preacher) gets a fraction of an inch from the gospel. People need to not only know the basic facts of the gospel, they need to know what those facts mean for them. I know that when the light comes on and they know who they are and why they are who they are they will be different people. Every ministry of every age group should be gospel centered, Christ saturated. People desperately need to know that better behavior is not the answer to life’s difficulties, Christ is the answer to those problems. Preaching holiness to carnal Christians is like teaching physics to pigs. It’s a waste of time. I promise that if you will teach a man about Jesus and what Jesus has accomplished for him and who he now is in Christ his life will change for the better. Many churches are trying to make great disciples of people who are not even saved. Unless you preach Christ, think, eat, and sleep gospel and grace your ministry and church will do little good.

Every great evangelist, every great revival, every great pastor, and every great missionary have one thing in common. They keep the main thing the main thing. And that thing is the good news about Jesus and what He as done for ungodly sinners and what he offers as a free gift. It never gets outdated, it never looses its power, it never fails. Please, preach Christ to your people.
